Create a simple Bash profile in FreeBSD PDF
Friday, 11 July 2014
Let's say you've installed bash from FreeBSD ports and you want to add a path to be searched when running scripts that you've placed in other paths than default ones, or you want to create aliases, you will need a .bash_profile file.

So in order to do that, create .bash_profile file in your user's home directory. For example we will create /home/john/.bash_profile file with the following content:

# custom bash
export PATH=/home/john/scripts/:$PATH

Don't forget to log-ut and login in order for changes to be made. To check if your shell is bash look into /etc/passwd file:

  cat /etc/passwd | grep john
