Find the version of your FreeBSD by looking into kernel binary PDF

If you want to find version of a FreeBSD kernel you can look into it's binary using string and sed commands:

  strings /boot/kernel/kernel | sed -n 's|^\(FreeBSD [0-9][0-9.]&#[^ ]*\).*|\1|p'

You will get:

FreeBSD 7.3-RELEASE-p2

or:

FreeBSD 9.0-RELEASE
