Error expanding embedded variable. PDF
Thursday, 23 February 2012
If you get the following error when trying to compile a newly created C++ app in Netbeans 7.x:

  "/usr/bin/make" -f nbproject/Makefile-Debug.mk QMAKE= SUBPROJECTS= .build-conf
  Error expanding embedded variable.
  *** Error code 2

  Stop in /root/NetBeansProjects/CppApplication_1.

BUILD FAILED (exit value 1, total time: 58ms)

Then go to Tools -> Options -> C++ and in Build Tools tab for the field Make command use the following value (will replace FreeBSD's make with gmake):

  /usr/local/bin/gmake            (instead of /usr/bin/make)

And voila your code will run now.

Note that you must have gmake installed. If you don't just install it from ports:

  cd /usr/ports/devel/gmake
  make install clean
