If you get the following error in your Apache httpd-error.log file when using .htaccess file from an Directory tag located in aliases.conf file:

  /usr/local/www/phpMyAdmin/.htaccess: AuthUserFile not allowed here

and when you try to load that page that should be protected by .htaccess, you get the folowing error in your browser:

Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Then the problem is that you migh have variable "AllowOverride limit". To solve the problem use:

  AllowOverride all

Your complete alias for this example would be:

Alias /phpmyadmin "/usr/local/www/phpMyAdmin"
<Directory "/usr/local/www/phpMyAdmin">
  Allow from all
  AuthType Basic
  AuthName "Restricted Files"
  AuthUserFile /usr/local/www/phpMyAdmin/.htpasswd
  Require valid-user
  AllowOverride all
  Order allow,deny

You can find aliases.conf file here /usr/local/etc/apache22/Includes/aliases.conf.
