If you get this error in FreeBSD:

  Cannot dump. Device not defined or unavailable.

after a reboot and you did not recompiled the kernel, the problem could be in the modules you load at boot or the services you start after boot process from /etc/rc.conf.

So, boot from a FreeBSD USB image and choose Fixit, then choose live FreeBSD image from USB. There mount your root partition (for example ad0s1a) and edit /boot/loader.conf and comment all modules you load there. Also you can disable some services from /etc/rc.conf to see if the problem is from one of those services.
