Install/boot FreeBSD from USB stick PDF
Thursday, 06 October 2011
If yo've just installed FreeBSD on an USB stick, Compact Flash card, SD card or USB external hard drive after installation process, in some cases (depending on hardware) you might not be able to boot from that USB device. The problem can be fixed by adding following lines to /boot/loader.conf file:

  geom_label_load="YES"
  kern.cam.boot_delay="10000"

The delay makes possible for USB device to be detected at boot. The geom_label_load helps sometimes when the OS will not properly detect partitions.
This solves "can't find usb boot device in FreeBSD" type of problems.
