If you have the user john and you want to add that user to group managers, in FreeBSD use pw command:

pw groupmod managers -M managers,john

Previous command modify managers group and add users managers and john to the group. If you've previously added more users to managers group do first a cat to see your all users that belong to that group:

  cat /etc/group | grep managers

Then you should add all users, including ones that are already added.
