Convert From Old Package Manager to pkgng PDF
Tuesday, 05 August 2014
If you want to convert your FreeBSD to use the newer package manager (pkgng) which is only default in FreeBSD 10.x you must first install it from FreeBSD's ports:

  cd /usr/ports/ports-mgmt/pkg
  make install clean

Then add the following line to /etc/make.conf in order to enable pkgng as your package manager:

  WITH_PKGNG=yes

Then convert your pagkage database (located in /var/db/pkg) to the new pkg format running:

  pkg2ng
